From its position on Castle Rock, Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline of this historic city and remains to this day the nucleus of Scotland’s capital. Although we remember it predominantly for its involvement in several conflicts during the medieval period, the castle’s history stretches some 3,000 years, from prehistoric times right up to the present day. During the medieval period, this castle was one of the most formidable fortresses in the British Islands. Its situation atop rocky terrain made it very difficult to approach for even the most determined attacker: on three sides the castle is well-defended by rocky slopes, whilst its multiple layers of defences provided the defenders ample locations from where they could hail a shower of missiles down on their unfortunate foe. Consequently, the Castle played a prominent role in various conflicts – from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite Rising of 1745 – and is claimed to be the most besieged place in Great Britain. Today the Castle is famous for being the home of several of Scotland’s greatest tourist attractions, including the Scottish Crown Jewels and the famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
