Penises, they’re everywhere in ancient art and sculpture…But back in Ancient Greece they were artistically embodied a bit differently…why? Size spoke volumes.
Dr Kate Lister and her handy tape measure are on a quest to get the measure of Ancient Greek statues in the Cambridge Museum of Classics and British Museum. As well as looking at the original sources to dig into the impact of Dionysiac rituals to the literature of Aristophanes.
Along the way she meets Classicist Professor Caroline Vout, gets the opinion of the general public and gets up close with the statues themselves to investigate how the portrayal of penis size has affected body image in Ancient Greece and today!
And ever thought about all those Ancient statues that are missing their members? Kate gets behind the scenes at the British Museum to dig into the Museum Secretum, a hidden collection full of erotic memorabilia to explore the reasoning behind these missing parts!
This film contains strong language and conversations of a sexual nature.
