Join Tristan Hughes on an exploration into the Iron Age, as he uncovers one of the most extraordinary archaeological discoveries in British history.
With exclusive access to the Melsonby Hoard, quite possibly the largest Iron Age hoard ever found in Britain, Tristan explores a treasure trove of over 900 artefacts, hidden beneath the North Yorkshire soil for over 2,000 years. From intricate chariot fittings to ornate horse harnesses, spears, and vast bronze cauldrons, this astonishing find offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the life, warfare, and ritual of ancient Britain.
As he delves into the craftsmanship and complexity of the objects, Tristan investigates what the hoard reveals about Iron Age society, from elite power and status to long-distance trade networks stretching across Europe.
Tristan also looks at the extremely challenging conservation work carried out by the team at Durham University, who took on the monumental task of preserving a 250kg block – a mass of Iron Age metalwork fused together after centuries underground.
Now housed at the Yorkshire Museum, the hoard is undergoing vital conservation work to unlock its full story. Tristan meets the experts behind the scenes and shines a light on the museum’s ongoing fundraising effort to preserve this once-in-a-generation discovery.
