Death: This episode begins with an extraordinary discovery - an ‘ice-mummy’, dubbed “Juanita”, found on a frozen volcano summit in the 1990s.
With very special access at the Andean Sanctuaries Museum, Arequipa, Dan comes face to face with this 13-year old victim and investigates the remarkable relationship the Inca had with death, both ritual sacrifices like Juanita and their wider relationship with the dead, who were still consulted and paraded, long after their passing. Time and the gulf between life and the afterlife were wholly different for the Inca.
This episode also looks into the zenith and collapse of the Inca Empire, how Spanish weapons, disease and attitudes to war helped bring them down - leaving behind clues that are still being discovered and interpreted about this incredible civilisation.
