In this talk, we will look at the involvement of two men, Matthew Hopkins and John Stearne, who used the tumultuous years of the British Civil War as an opportunity to appoint themselves as witch finders. We will explore belief in magic and the peculiarities of English witchcraft and examine how two men, with the support of local communities, were able to establish the largest episode of witch persecution in English history.
