38m
2000 years ago deep in the forests of Germany a Roman army was walking into a trap, a trap set by a man they thought was their friend…after months of planning the great climax to Arminius, his deception had arrived…the Battle of Teutoburg Forest had begun.
In episode two Tristan Hughes uncovers new information about three of the worst days in Roman history. How exactly did this dense, remote forest end up as the graveyard of thousands of Roman soldiers?
Tristan digs deeper into what we know about the battle and why, investigating contemporary texts by Cassius Dio and getting hands on with archeology from the battle.
By September Arminius' plan was afoot, this unwieldy Roman column was about to be savagely attacked, Arminius unleashed his first strike. A hail of missiles - spears and slingshot - suddenly rained down on the unsuspecting Roman column. Before a horde of bloodthirsty Germanic warriors descended from the treeline, attacking their foe from all directions.
But these soldiers were the greatest of their age, surely they could easily take on some troublesome barbarians?
