I have been recently writing my MA-Thesis on the topic of Catharism in southern France, and I wanted to know the opinion of people as to what they know about Catharism, or about heresy in medieval Europe in general. I am looking forward to reading the responses.
They believed in reincarnation. Were known as goodfellows,I think. Were protected in Languedoc area France. No church, no tithes, no indulgences, but were both men and women leadership. Were persecuted by the Catholic Church with the formation of the Dominicans starting a crusade that later morphed into the Inquisition. Since these areas in France did not hold allegiances to a set king they were lenient on the Cathars and many in the nobility practiced the faith also. Many captured leadership were burned at the stake. But the faith is still viable and I suggest finding one of the faithful and see beyond history what they have to offer in information.
