Orwell's magnificent Homage to Catalonia, the International Brigades; both inspirational in what they represented but also glossing over the brutality of Stalinist communism.

Less obviously, I'm a massive fan of Judith Keene's book on foreign volunteers for Franco "Fighting for Franco" - it's available on Amazon, and I'm sure available more cheaply elsewhere. It's an outstanding and fascinating book.

I do agree with you on how fascinating this particular pre-war conflict is, the International Brigades have always been a wonder to me. I have read Orwell's work on this while studying the Spanish Civil War and it is remarkable.

Another good book that I enjoyed, and highly recommend is "The Real Band of Brothers" by Max Hastings, perhaps the last time original accounts could be catalogued around the International Brigade. There are some unique characters within this.

I was amazed by the amount of Poles in the International Brigades.
